Great bag

Admittedly, I am obsessed with bags of all kinds so it should come as no surprise that when I saw the Vitesse Cycling Musette reviewed on NYT Wirecutter, I did not hesitate to hit “purchase.” I have no regrets. It’s such a cool bag. I use it every day. Bravo, Waterfield!

Perfect size and finish

The perfect musette and doubles as a small briefcase

I say it's perfect as a musette because it widens a bit toward the top and this slight angle makes a subtle wing shape that creates the right kind of friction to keep the Vitesse Musette from sliding off your back as you ride. The waxed canvas also makes some friction to that keeps it sitting stably on your back on your bike. The extra width at the top makes it hold your stuff better too: a Mac Air 13 and iPad and other stuff fit easily, and carry easily even while you're riding. Off the bike, the Vitesse Musette's carry handle make it work well as a small briefcase, and you can stuff it in this mode. It carries easily by the handle, or shoulder strap if you're carrying coffee and don't have a free hand to carry it by the handle. As someone who has sewn handles onto messenger bags in the past, I can tell you this musette set up exactly as you'd want a simple cloth shoulder bag to work. It's light too--not light enough to keep in a pannier while touring to carry food from the shops, and not light enough to hand up food to racers from the team car--it's not that kind of musette. It's a more versatile do everything musette like the old US Army M1936 Musette but better, and roomier than the Swiss Army Musette too. Waterfield seem to have an iterative approach to design where their items improve with each version as they see what can be made better. For example, the shape and size is dialed, the shoulder strap is sewn at the right spot and correct angle and is the right weight and width, and the one buckle closure simplifies use so you can open and close it one-handed. It's all worked out to the small details.

Great quality. Love the thicker canvas from the old version. Makes it a touch more rugged. Only real complaint is the bottom part of the latch always slides down to the largest settinf, due to its weight. I miss the old leather-and-peg latch, since that could be closed with one hand. New one requires two hands, so i often just let it hang open. Still the best mussette/messanger on the market, though

I bought this bag for travel purposes and it's just the right size to take on a plane to carry a laptop or tablet or other stuff. Well designed shoulder strap, heavy duty clasp and good looking finish and color. Fairly priced.

HEAVY-DUTY 15 OZ. WAXED CANVAS

Not all waxed canvas bags are created equal. Lower quality bags use 6 oz. canvas. The majority designated as “durable” use 12 oz. canvas. At 15 oz., our waxed canvas exceeds what is commonly sold in the market, yet it's still lightweight. It has a naturally rugged, distressed look and can be re-waxed to freshen it up.

The canvas comes from a reputable U.S. mill that has produced these fabrics since 1930. This specialized textile is coated with Martexin Original Wax™ and shouldn't require much cleaning. Stains can be wiped off with a damp cloth.

HOW TO FRESHEN UP YOUR CANVAS

Keep your bag Vitesse Cycling Musette looking new by applying wax when you think it needs a little refresh. Although you can use any wax, you may want to try Martexin Original Wax™ which was initially used to coat your canvas bag.

FULL-GRAIN LEATHER

No skimping. We use full grain, natural leather. It's the toughest part of the hide with the tightest grain. It's also the most expensive and lasts the longest.

We use “distressed” leather that bears the marks of the cow, so you can tell it's the real thing. Over the years, you'll leave your own marks, too, and the gorgeous patina that develops will bear your hallmark.

Your full-grain leather Vitesse Cycling Musette will look better and better the more you use it.

CARING FOR YOUR LEATHER BAG

We generally recommend leaving the full-grain leather of your bag alone, letting it develop its own unique patina over time. You can spruce up the distressed leather that we use by applying heat from a hair dryer and spreading the leather oils around to smooth them out.

You may also want to freshen up the leather with a bit of leather conditioner. Upon application, the leather may darken a bit, so test the reaction first on a spot that's not highly visible, like the bottom of the bag.
